Navigating Transitions
Tip of the Week: Navigating Transitions
Transitions can be particularly challenging for autistic girls and young women, whether it’s moving between activities, changing environments, or facing new situations. Here are three strategies to make transitions smoother:
1. Use Visual Schedules: Create a visual timetable that outlines the day’s activities. This can help prepare for upcoming changes and provide a clear structure. You can include pictures or symbols to represent different tasks, making it easier to follow along.
2. Practice Transitioning: Rehearse transitions before they happen. For example, if your daughter is moving from school to home, practice the steps involved. Role-playing and discussing what to expect can help reduce anxiety and create familiarity.
3. Incorporate Transition Objects: Having a comfort item that can be taken during transitions—like a favorite toy, a small sensory object, or even a stress ball—can provide a sense of security and help ease the anxiety associated with change.
Remember: It’s okay to need time and support when navigating transitions. Everyone experiences change differently, and having tools in place can make the process easier.
