Managing Decision-Making Difficulties
Tip of the Week: Managing Decision-Making Difficulties
Many autistic and ADHD girls struggle with decision-making, whether it’s choosing what to wear, picking an activity, or making bigger life choices. This can be due to executive functioning challenges, overwhelm, or anxiety about making the “wrong” choice. Here are three strategies to help make decision-making easier:
1. Limit Options: Too many choices can feel overwhelming. Narrow things down to two or three options where possible. Instead of asking, “What do you want for lunch?” try, “Would you like a sandwich or pasta?”
2. Use Visual or Written Aids: Decision-making can be easier when options are written down or presented visually. Creating pros and cons lists, using decision-making apps, or even flipping a coin can help remove the pressure.
3. Allow More Processing Time: Some decisions take longer to process, and that’s okay. Giving yourself time to step away and come back to a decision later can reduce stress and help with clarity.
Remember: Struggling with decision-making isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a common challenge for many neurodivergent individuals. By creating strategies that work for you, decision-making can feel less overwhelming and more manageable.
